The History of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

The ancient art of Jiu Jitsu is said to have originated 2500 years ago in India – developed by buddhist monks as a method of self defence against thieves on long journeys. Buddhist values discouraged the use of weapons, so the monks instead applied laws of physics such as leverage, momentum, center of gravity, and manipulation of human anatomy to defeat opponents. The art spread throughout countries and across continents to Japan, where it was refined by the Japanese into a very sophisticated and complete grappling system called Jiu Jitsu.

In the early 1900’s, the Japanese Jiu Jitsu champion introduced the art of Jiu Jitsu to a Brazilian family, the Gracies. Helio Gracie altered and developed the Japanese art into what is known today as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Modern Day Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is rapidly growing in New Zealand. Techniques are taught on mats, where students learn to bring opponents to the ground in take downs, using holds, arm locks and leg locks .

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu favours leverage and timing over strength and speed, making it an ideal sport and method of self defence for young people, and adults of all ages and fitness levels.
